1835 Hinman houses 229 men and women in single and double-occupancy rooms. Men and women live in alternate suite arrangements on each floor. Located on south campus, it is relatively close to downtown Evanston. The dorm a TV lounge, a recreation room, study rooms, kitchenettes, vending machines and a dining hall on the first floor. The basement holds the laundry services for the dorm. 1835 Hinman opened in fall 1982 as part of a $23 million undergraduate housing initiative in the early 1980s.

    In 2003, 2251 Sheridan located in the Fraternity Quad of North campus, opened it doors to only transfer students giving them a house of their own amongst fellow transfer students. It houses 48 men and women on 4 floors in double-occupancy rooms, with each floor separated for men and women. It is conveniently located near the Henry Crowne Sports Pavilion and Aquatics Center and the Technological Institute.

     Willard Hall was dedicated on September 28, 1938, on the 99th anniversary of the birth of its namesake, Frances Willard. Built at a cost of $630,000, some of which came from the Northwestern Alumni Association, the hall was designed by James Gamble Rogers. Willard houses 290 men and women in single, double, triple, and quadruple-occupancy rooms. Men and women live in separate wings on each floor.

    Shepard Residential College was constructed in 1952.  It is located on South Campus and is a co-ed residential college with thematic clusters.  It houses 180 men and women in single, double and triple-occupancy rooms.  Men and women live in separate wings on each floor.  Shepard has a main lounge, TV/VCR lounge, recreation room, music practice rooms, library, computer facilities, classroom and vending machines for the use of its residents.  It does not have a dining facility within it.

    West Fairchild, also known as the International Studies Residential College (ISRC), opened in 1981.  It offers a global perspective using language dining tables, language suites created by grouping students with similar cultural backgrounds, and a general atmosphere encouraging involvement with international affairs.  103 men and women live in ISRC in single and double-occupancy rooms.  Men and women live in language suite arrangements and have access to a main lounge, TV lounge, seminar room, computer room, activity area, kitchenettes and vending machines.  ISRC is located on South Campus, but closer to the lake.  It does not have a dining facility within it.

    Elder Residence Hall is a dormitory housing only Freshmen students.  It was built in 1959, but turned all-Freshmen in the Fall of 2004.  It is part of the “Freshmen Quad” and is located on North Campus.  Elder houses 287 men and women in single and double-occupancy rooms.  Men and women live in separate wings on each floor.  Elder has a main lounge, floor lounges, TV rooms, a recreation room, a study room, a kitchenette, and vending machines.  It houses a cafeteria in the basement.

    Foster Walker Complex was built in 1973 and is often referred to as “Plex” by students.  It is four-stories tall, and consists of four towers in each of two wings.  Plex houses 627 men and women in 595 single and 8 quadruple rooms.  Men and women live in clusters on each floor and baths are shared by 4 people.  Plex residents have use of lounges, a recreation room, a kitchenette, and vending machines.  Plex is one of the few dorms with air conditioned rooms.  It also houses a cafeteria – so large that it is actually split into two.  Plex also has a convenience store (called the “C-Store”) that stocks many essential things for students.  Effective in 2006, Plex reserves all its single rooms for upperclassmen only.

    Kemper was opened in the fall of 1999. Named in honor of James S. Kemper, the founder of the Kemper Group of insurance and financial services companies, Kemper Kemper houses 177 men and women in single and double-occupancy rooms. There are 11 self-contained suites of doubles, with 2 shared baths and a lounge; there are 16 self-contained suites of singles, with 2 shared baths, a lounge, and a kitchen. Kemper houses primarily upperclassmen, and is not open to freshman.

    Sargent Hall is located on north campus and houses 152 men and women in single and double-occupancy rooms. Men and women live on separate floors. It is one of the dorms that comes with a dining hall in the dorm itself. It was built in 1950 and originally was a men’s dining hall on campus. It is conveniently located near the Henry Crowne Sports Pavilion and Aquatics Center and the Technological Institute.

    Jones Fine and Performing Arts Residential College houses 118 men and women in single and double-occupancy rooms. Men and women live in alternate suite arrangements. Located on south campus, it was dedicated in the fall of 1982, and has a number of features that are tailored towards performance and arts students, such as performance room, computer rooms, art and craft studios, a dance studio and practice rooms.

    Bobb Hall, located on North campus, houses 245 men and women in double and one triple-occupancy rooms. Men and women live in separate wings on each floor. Opened in 1955, it served as a residence hall for 198 freshman men and four resident counselors until 1973, when the building became a coeducational residence.

    Allison houses 355 men and women in double and 3 triple-occupancy rooms. Men and women live in separate wings on each floor. It is located on south campus, with easy access to downtown Evanston. It has its own dining hall and several study rooms within the building. The dorm has a main lounge on the first floor with a TV, pool table, foosball table, and vending machines. The dorm also comes with a lounge on each floor. Each floor also comes with two washers and two dryers for laundry. Allison Hall was originally opened in 1960 as a residence for 371 freshman women. It is named in honor of Ruth Jones Allison, who bequeathed a gift to Northwestern of $1 million upon her death in 1957.
